IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has told a team of Economic Commission Of West African States (ECOWAS) election observers of its commitment to ensuring free, fair, transparent, and incident free elections.

The IGP, together with members of the police management board, met a team ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions ECONEC, one of the issues that came up was the use of social media during elections.

The spread of fake news, using inflammatory language, comments, and propaganda intensify during elections and they have the potential to cause unnecessary fear and panic.

The IGP assured the ECOWAS electoral Commissions team of its commitment in playing its professional role in ensuring these things are brought down to the barest minimum.

Special investigators and legal team members will be assigned to review comments by opposing political parties.

Those found culpable will be made to face the law and get prosecuted the IGP emphasised

There will be avenue for police to engage citizens online to control the spread of fake news.

Key stakeholders such as the political parties, the electoral commission, civil society groups and the general public will constantly be engaged by the police to ensure an incident free elections.
