Black Princesses thrash Senegal to qualify for Women Under 20 World Cup

In a commanding performance, Ghana’s U20 women’s football team, the Black Princesses, secured their place in the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup by defeating Senegal 5-1 in the final qualifying round second leg. The victory at Baba Yara Stadium sealed a convincing 7-1 aggregate win for Ghana.


Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg on home turf, Senegal took an early lead with a goal just four minutes into the match. However, the Black Princesses swiftly turned the tide, as Maafia Nyame equalized in the 18th minute, followed by Berline Nyarkoh’s impressive shot doubling the lead after 23 minutes.

Tracy Twum extended the lead further with a well-converted penalty in the 67th minute, and Nyarkoh secured a personal brace with a goal from inside the box after 72 minutes, making it a 4-1 lead for Ghana. Substituting in, Salamatu Abdulai added to the commanding performance by scoring the fifth goal in the 78th minute.

With this victory, Ghana joins Nigeria, Morocco, and Cameroon as Africa’s representatives in the upcoming 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Colombia from August 21 to September 22, 2024
