Newcastle United wins consecutive Sela Cup

Newcastle United have successfully defended their Sela Cup title, claiming victory for the second year running in a tournament that saw participation from Spanish La Liga side Girona and French Ligue 1 team Stade Brestois.

The Magpies got off to a flying start, demolishing Girona with a commanding 4-0 win in their opening match. The momentum continued into the final, where a solitary goal from Harvey Barnes secured a 1-0 triumph over Stade Brestois on Saturday afternoon at St. James' Park.

Barnes' decisive strike came just 15 minutes into the match, the winger showcasing his skill with a composed low finish after collecting a long ball from Lloyd Kelly, who was making his first appearance at St. James’ Park since joining the club in July. Despite a spirited effort from the visitors, Barnes’ goal was enough to seal the win, with the Magpies' defence holding firm throughout.

William Osula, also making his debut for Newcastle, was unfortunate not to find the net, as his well-taken goal was ruled out for offside. The young forward was a lively presence, with his early efforts setting the tone for a dominant first-half display from the home side.

Newcastle continued to press after the break, with substitute Trevan Sanusi impressing once again following his impactful performance in the previous match against Girona. The tricky youngster caused problems down the left flank, nearly setting up Miguel Almirón for a goal, only for the pass to just evade the Paraguayan.

Stade Brestois had few opportunities to threaten the Magpies' goal, with their best chances coming from Mathias Pereira Lage and Jordan Amavi, both of which were comfortably dealt with by Newcastle's defence. Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos, also making his home debut, made a solid impression with a late save from a Pereira Lage header.

The win marked a fitting end to Newcastle United's pre-season campaign, with Eddie Howe’s side looking sharp and ready for the challenges ahead. Adding to the day's celebrations, Newcastle United Women also lifted their trophy after a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over AC Milan Women earlier in the day.

The Magpies will now turn their attention to the upcoming Premier League season, buoyed by their success in the Sela Cup and eager to build on their strong pre-season form.
